Tianjin 天津 & London

2017-18

This project initiates a visual dialogue between urban landscapes in Tianjin and London, influenced by my relocation from China to the UK in 2017.

The urban settings of Tianjin and London serve as urban backdrops where zoo enclosures merge with the cityscape. The zoo, symbolising animal displacement and control, mirrors the vast, often restrictive urban spaces, so do parking lots and fenced walkways, which draw parallels between the isolation of animals, vegetations and human experiences within the city.

Using large format film cameras with a black-and-white aesthetic reminiscent of the New Topographics movement, the series portrays cityscapes and built environments. The project reflects on displacement, urban expansion, and the blurred boundary between the natural and the man-made.
