Growth of the Rock

2018

Facing the Mediterranean Sea and Africa, British Overseas Territory Gibraltar is located at the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula, bordering Spain. I carried a 4x5 large format camera, walking and hiking along the coast and the border between A Linea (Spain) and Europa Point (Gibraltar).

The vegetation speaks to the overwhelming vitality. I felt everything was fierce there. Each plant and rock is growing exuberantly and striving for the sunshine. While it is supposed to be literally a British landscape, the sunlight is glaring and Spanish. The dense composition of the sharp leaves in dark green and the solid and textural rocks speaks to the ‘humble eagerness’ to survive and reclaim the land back, both geographically and spiritually, i suppose.

What else? In 2018, when I was there, the mainland UK had just entered through Brexit procedure, while about 96% of people in Gibraltar voted to remain in the EU.
